How to Select High-Quality Geotextile? Complete Guide of Identification Skills

October 16, 2026

Geotextile is the most widely used and cost-effective basic geosynthetic material in geotechnical projects such as subgrade reinforcement, water conservancy anti-seepage and slope protection. However, many engineering purchasers often fall into selection misunderstandings. The price of geotextile of the same specification varies greatly. Low-cost products will crack, lose water permeability and suffer aging damage after construction, resulting in project rework and doubled costs. Many people only focus on the unit price per gram weight, ignoring raw materials, manufacturing processes and performance parameters, which will eventually affect the overall project quality and service life. Combined with practical engineering experience, this article will teach you to scientifically select and accurately identify high-quality geotextile, avoid procurement traps and select suitable materials for different construction scenarios.

1. Distinguish core categories of geotextile and match corresponding engineering scenarios

The mainstream geotextiles on the market are divided into three major categories: filament geotextile, short filament geotextile and polypropylene geotextile. Their raw materials and performance differ greatly, and they are suitable for different scenarios, which is the basic basis for selection. Short filament geotextile is made of polyester short fibers. It has the lowest price, weak tensile performance and short service life. It is only suitable for temporary slope protection, simple backfill isolation and other short-term light-duty projects. Filament geotextile is produced by drawing original polyester chips. It has balanced performance, excellent tensile, anti-aging and water permeability. It is a general material for subgrade reinforcement, river regulation and artificial lake anti-seepage, and also the mainstream material for municipal engineering at present.

Polypropylene geotextile is made of PP material. It has strong tear resistance and puncture resistance with top physical strength, but poor UV resistance and sun resistance. It is suitable for soft foundation treatment and retaining wall reinforcement projects buried deep underground without long-term sunlight exposure. A common procurement mistake is blindly choosing low-cost short-filament products for permanent projects, or using polypropylene geotextile in sun-exposed scenarios, which directly leads to premature material failure. Clarify the service environment of the project to lock in the suitable category and avoid wrong selection from the source.

2. Raw material identification: the core quality gap between virgin material and recycled material

The core reason for the price gap of geotextile lies in the difference of raw materials, which is also the key to distinguish quality. High-quality national standard geotextile adopts brand-new virgin polyester and polypropylene raw materials, with high purity and no impurities. The fibers are uniform and dense. The finished product has bright color and soft hand feel, not easy to break when stretched, with stable anti-aging and corrosion resistance. Its service life can reach 15-20 years. Most low-cost non-standard products on the market are mixed with recycled plastic and waste chemical fiber recycled materials. The raw materials contain many impurities, and the fiber thickness is uneven. The finished product has dark color and rough hand feel, with uneven thickness and pinhole defects on the surface.

The biggest hidden danger of recycled material geotextile is unstable performance. The tensile strength and water permeability coefficient fail to meet the standard. After long-term contact with soil acid and alkali and temperature changes, it is easy to embrittle, crack and delaminate, and the service life is only 3-5 years. Some unscrupulous merchants also falsely mark the gram weight. The product marked 200g/㎡ actually only has 160g/㎡, which greatly reduces the engineering protection effect. During procurement, preliminary identification can be carried out through visual observation, hand touch and simple tensile test to reject non-standard recycled material products.

3. Verify key performance parameters and meet national standards to avoid pitfalls

When purchasing geotextile, you cannot only look at the appearance. You must verify the core performance parameters and meet the GB/T 17639 national standard to ensure that it meets the requirements of engineering construction. First look at the gram weight. 100g-600g/㎡ is commonly used in conventional projects. The higher the gram weight, the more stable the quality. Accurate selection should be made according to subgrade bearing capacity and protection level. Secondly, check the tensile strength and elongation at break. High-quality filament geotextile has uniform longitudinal and transverse tensile strength, and the elongation at break is controlled within a reasonable range without local fracture during stretching.

At the same time, pay close attention to tearing strength, puncture resistance and water permeability. Subgrade drainage projects need to ensure that the water permeability coefficient meets the standard to achieve efficient drainage and isolation; slope reinforcement projects need to strengthen tear resistance and puncture resistance to resist soil extrusion and friction. Regular manufacturers can provide third-party test reports with traceable parameters meeting national standards, while small workshop products have no testing qualification, with serious false marking of parameters and cannot guarantee engineering quality.

4. Process and detail identification to lock high-quality products

The production process directly determines the durability and stability of geotextile. High-quality geotextile adopts high-temperature hot melt needling process, with tightly interwoven fibers, no loose thread ends, flat and uniform cloth surface, consistent thickness, neat edges without wire shedding after cutting. Inferior products have rough processes, insufficient needling density and loose fibers. The cloth surface is uneven in thickness, easy to shed wires and delaminate after cutting, and prone to damage and bulging after paving.

In addition, a simple sun exposure test can identify anti-aging performance. High-quality virgin material geotextile has no obvious change in color and strength after 1-2 months of exposure; recycled material products will quickly turn yellow, become brittle and lose toughness after short-term exposure. For engineering procurement, priority should be given to products from source manufacturers, without markup by middlemen. Custom specifications are available, together with after-sales technical guidance to meet the personalized needs of different projects.

In summary, the procurement of geotextile needs to select categories according to scenarios, check raw materials, verify parameters and identify processes. Reject the trap of low-cost non-standard products, take adaptability and stability as the core, so as to ensure the long-term stability of geotechnical engineering and reduce the cost of later maintenance and rework.
