Commercial Wall Material Selection Checklist: 5 Scenarios

Commercial Wall Material Selection Checklist: 5 Scenarios

October 16, 2026

Hotels, offices, retail, restaurants, healthcare—different commercial spaces have distinctly different wall material requirements. Hotels need a balance of luxury and durability, offices focus on soundproofing and eco-friendliness, retail pursues visual impact, restaurants require fire and oil resistance, and healthcare puts antibacterial and eco standards first. Choosing the wrong material affects not only user experience but also safety and costly rework. This article provides a wall material selection checklist for five commercial scenarios.

1. Hotel Spaces: Differentiated Selection for Rooms & Public Areas

Hotel guest rooms are where guests stay longest—warmth and eco-friendliness are top priorities. For headboard feature walls, recommend wood veneer or bamboo-fiber wood-grain panels to enhance texture and premium feel; for other walls, pair with pure non-woven or non-woven backed wallpaper in warm, low-saturation patterns to create a quiet, comfortable atmosphere.

Guest room materials also need stain resistance and maintainability—choose scratch-resistant, wipable surfaces. Public areas like lobbies, corridors, and elevator halls have high foot traffic with higher durability and fire requirements. Lobby feature walls can use metal composite or stone-look inorganic panels; corridors and elevator halls recommend Class A fireproof metal composite or inorganic panels with lifespan over 20 years.

2. Office Spaces: Functional Needs for Open Areas & Meeting Rooms

Modern office wall selection revolves around two cores: efficiency and comfort. Open office areas have dense personnel, making sound insulation and absorption key needs. Recommend acoustic functional panels with micro-perforated or fabric-covered surfaces and sound-absorbing cotton filling, effectively reducing reverberation time and improving speech clarity. Colorful acoustic panels also serve as decorative elements.

Meeting rooms and phone booths have higher sound insulation requirements. Recommend lightweight partition soundproof panels—double-sided gypsum or calcium silicate boards with soundproof cotton filling, achieving 45-50dB sound reduction. Meeting room walls can also consider writable panels with special coating for whiteboard marker writing, ideal for brainstorming. Office eco-friendliness matters too—recommend ENF-rated eco panels or pure non-woven wallpaper.

3. Retail Spaces: Balancing Display Effect & Durability

Retail walls are important brand display carriers—visual impact is the top priority. For showcase and entrance areas, recommend custom wallpaper murals or 3D wall panels, customizable in patterns and colors according to brand VI to create strong visual memory. Mature digital printing has drastically reduced small-batch custom mural costs, especially suitable for fast fashion brands and influencer stores.

Product display area walls need to complement merchandise well. Premium brand stores can use wood veneer or metal composite panels; FMCG stores can use color-coated panels or solid-color wallpaper. Display walls also need shelf installation convenience—pre-perforated integrated panels allow flexible shelf height adjustment. Retail spaces have high foot traffic—recommend high abrasion-resistant PVC surface panels or non-woven backed wallpaper.

4. Restaurant Spaces: Special Fire & Oil Resistance Requirements

Restaurant wall selection has two hard indicators: fire and oil resistance. According to building interior decoration fire codes, restaurant wall material combustion performance should not be below Class B1, with large restaurants and mall-based restaurants requiring Class A. Thus fireproofing is the first threshold. Recommend Class A non-combustible metal composite panels, calcium silicate boards, or inorganic pre-coated panels.

Oil and stain resistance is another major challenge. Kitchen and prep area walls have long-term oil fume exposure—must choose dense, non-oil-absorbing, easy-to-clean surfaces. Stainless steel or enamel steel panels are the top choice for kitchens, with smooth surfaces that wipe clean and resist high temperatures and corrosion. Dining areas can choose stain-resistant coated inorganic pre-coated panels or PVC surface panels. For hotpot restaurants with heavy oil fume, recommend metal or inorganic panels throughout.

5. Healthcare Spaces: Antibacterial & Eco Hard Standards

Healthcare spaces have the strictest wall material requirements—antibacterial, eco, fireproof, and easy-to-clean are all indispensable. In hospital wards, corridors, and operating rooms, wall materials must have excellent antibacterial performance. Recommend medical-specific panels with silver-ion antibacterial agents, achieving over 99% antibacterial rate against common pathogens like E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, with long-lasting antibacterial effect.

Healthcare walls also need to withstand frequent disinfection. Hospitals wipe walls daily with chlorine disinfectants and alcohol—ordinary materials easily corrode and discolor. Medical-specific panels use special surface coatings resistant to acids, alkalis, and disinfectants, withstanding multiple daily wipes without fading. Eco-wise, must choose zero-formaldehyde inorganic or metal composite panels; fire rating must reach Class A non-combustible.

6. Quick Selection Reference Table

Hotel rooms: wood veneer/bamboo-fiber panels for headboards, non-woven backed wallpaper for other walls, Class B1+ fire rating, budget $21-42/sqm. Hotel public areas: metal composite/inorganic panels for lobby, Class A fireproof metal panels for corridors, budget $28-56/sqm.

Office open areas: acoustic functional panels, ENF eco-rated, budget $14-35/sqm. Office meeting rooms: lightweight soundproof partitions + writable panels, budget $21-42/sqm. Retail display: custom mural wallpaper/3D panels + abrasion-resistant PVC panels, budget $11-35/sqm. Restaurants: Class A fireproof metal/inorganic panels + stain-resistant coating, stainless/enamel steel for kitchens, budget $21-49/sqm. Healthcare: medical-grade antibacterial inorganic/metal composite panels, Class A fireproof zero-formaldehyde, budget $28-56/sqm.

Finally, prices are for reference only—actual prices vary by brand, specifications, purchase volume, and installation complexity. Recommend obtaining samples for on-site testing before formal procurement, and requiring suppliers to provide complete test reports and certification. Choosing the right wall material not only enhances space quality but also reduces long-term operational costs.
